Default T56 compatibility question

Okay fellas got a quick question... i have a T56 that came out of a 98 Camaro SS, I was wondering if there are any engines aside from the ls1 that are compatible with this transmission? Thanks in advance for your help.

Absolutely. As long as you have the right parts, you can use the LS1 T56 behind a variety of engines including the small block and big block GM engines.

Depends on how much you want to spend..a basic bolt up will be to any LS Engine as long as it's the standard Crank Flange.

A friend of mine has a third gen Camaro that he’s trying to put together. I believe he is going to put a motor that came out of a 1985 corvette into his car, but he is in need of a transmission. He doesn’t have much money, and I happen to have an extra T56 transmission sitting in my garage. I want to give it to him, but im unsure if he will be able to use it.

Yeah it can be done. A lot of guys swap T56 units into 3rd gen cars.

The '85 motor will need to use a T5 bellhousing/linkage with a Tremec adapter plate on the LS1 T56. Otherwise you'll need to get a conversion bellhousing (McLeod, etc.) that mates with the longer inputshaft LS1-T56 and run aftermarket Hyd TOB setup.

I snagged an LS- type and have been learning as I go what's needed to make it work for my regular sbc stroker.

The 'simple' way would have been to change the input shaft, front plate and bellhousing to LT- and then get a puller slave cyl. instead of the hyd. throwout bearing that LS- uses.

But I chose to keep the box intact so I had to buy the Qucktime adapter bellhousing. This adds some info:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...d-equal-2.html

The guy who sold me the tranny also included his LS-7 flywheel and clutch and he mentioned in passing I'd want the 'crank spacer' to properly engage the starter (Part# 12563532). I picked one up -just in case- when everything goes in.

I get to retain the Rhino TO bearing that came with the tranny which seems a little more direct-acting than a puller slave type setup. The seller informed me of the .125 precision spacer he had added behind it for optimal clutch release. HTH
