Default Going to fix the leak this weekend....

Well I have posted once or twice and have done some searching as to why my car is leaking fluid out of the rear of the tranny. I am leaning toward the seal and bushing in the tailshaft housing. I am going to remove the tailsahft this weekend and check it out. I have never done any kind of trans work but it is my understanding that I just need to unbolt the drive shaft, the trans brace, and unbolt the tailshaft housing and go from there. Are there any tips, tricks, or advice anybody would like to share? Thanks in advance.

sounds like your rear seal is leaking. It's a pretty simple fix, drain fluid, remove drive shaft, and the seal should be accessible. Just make sure when removing the old seal not to mar up the mating surface. And, when putting in your new seal make sure to lube it up and make sure it seats properly. A huge socket should do the trick with helping it seat, that or some spare exhaust piping.

Will there be a sure fire way to tell if it is that seal or the actual pressed in seal? I do know that when it started leaking you could smell the fluid burning when I went WOT (probably wasn't too smart of me).

Well usually when that seal goes it leaks from the tail of the transmission (That's how I would tell if the seal is bad because it is one of the only seals holding fluid near that area). It is possible that when going at wot the leak is slung onto the y pipe and burning. I would suggest changing the seal if it has never been changed before and starting there. It's pretty cheap to replace and if it doesn't fix the problem I would suggest taking it to a trans shop.

So how exactly do you remove the seal?
