The bronze fork pads are metal so they fit snug on to the fork. The plastic fork pads are kept on the fork by these pins.

What I meant was, do the bronze pieces just stay on by friction fit alone, or are they sort of "captive" once the fork goes into the slider groove and prevents them from coming out under usage?

If someone is looking into creating new aftermarket T56 fork pads, it might be better to look into the Vespel engineered plastic pads like the new Viper TR6060 units use. (Mentioned by Calhoon in the T56 Magnum thread) Since the material would have been tested for use in an ATF environment, I would trust it over other materials...

They are held in by friction and held captive by the synchro ring.

Hey Mike, I have already seen failure of the fork pads on a 2009 Z06 TR6060. I would like to have delrin made and tested myself.

Ok.. You may know for sure.. From reading the post by Calhoon, only the Viper TR6060s got the upgraded Vespel pads...

I like the bronze ones, I've looked @ mine @8k after new and they looked fine. I also recomend trashing the sheet metal synchro inserts. I beat my tranny.

old thread, but a great topic; what's the "must have" material for the fork pads??

I was also looking at that camaroperformers article and noticed Rockland was using the plastic pads..........maybe they were the Viper Vespel and that was the "MINOR" detail left out????

As I said before and its still true, only Viper TR6060s have Vespel pads. Therefore any as-built units with pad probs have the black plastic pads.
The bronze pads would not have the molded-in"nibs" to retain them as the black pads do. To say the bronze pads retain a interference fit once they heat up is just mis- information. While they may be trapped, they waddle all over the place. Also, most of the "bronze" pads I have seen are actually brass....a VERY different material. I have also seen bronze pads at the bottom( out of place) of a trans. at teardown. The Vespel pads would do the same thing except they are glued in place.
Buy what you want ....3 24hrs of lemans wins in Viper GTS-Rs is all the proof I need.

I have done a ton of T56 units with bronze pads and with the exception of one customer riding around in 5-6 gear with his hand on the stick, I haven't had any issues to report. I've also used a ton of plastic pads with few failures within the warranty period.

This^^^^. All the ones we have tested have all been yellow brass but sold as bronze.
