The car should be level for your most accurate reading;
1. There's a fill plug on the driver's side of the tranny.
2. Remove the plug, if fluid starts coming out, your fluid level is ok.
3. Use Dexron III or equivalent.
4. If you are low, put fluid in until it starts to dribble out the fill hole.
5. If you decide to completely drain and refill, it takes 4 quarts. There's a drain hole on the passenger's side, at the rear of the tranny.
By the way, if you're going to that extent to check your fluid, it wouldn't be much more effort to change your fluid. I changed my fluid at about 50k miles. I used a cheap fluid transer pump from Autozone. The tranny did shift noticeably smoother for me.
It took me longer to get the car up in the air and level than it took me to change the fluid.
