Likely won't help.. Sounds like you need the trans opened up again and inspected for proper parts and clearances..

A symptom that the trans needs to be opened up and inspected again. It's possible that the 1-2 synchro snap-ring busted and you're going to start causing costly damage if you continue using it.

i hope it's just the snap ring that would be easy to repair without completely tearing down the transmission, wouldn't it?

the guy is telling me it's possible i broke the 2nd gear snap ring when I tapped the reluctor ring into place, even though i did it with a piece of soft pvc.

going to pull the transmission now.

The snap-ring repair (if that's what it is) is a complete teardown.

If you had supported the mainshaft on the 2nd gear, tapping the reluctor on could break the snap-ring. If the bottom half of the trans was still together when you put on the reluctor, then almost impossible you could have popped the snap-ring.

he's offered to do it for free, we took the tail shaft and front off and found the bearing in the front was shattered, 2nd gear was loose on the shaft, he wiggled it around and showed me.

The bearing was so shot on the front that the input shaft wobbled like a bitch, and fluid leaked out behind the slave cylinder from the shaft moving. From first glance he said it looks like i need a new seal in the front, the bearing in the front, and the snap ring for 2nd gear.

If someone that rebuilds these has a few spare or used parts like this they'd let go, please let me know.

Mike and TheSource, the car was able to use 2nd gear perfectly when I could get it into 2nd, and there was no immediate visible damage on the gear. Is it possible the gear does not need replaced?

The gears usually don't go bad, they chip or crack. If it passes a visual, it's probably ok..

Quick Reply: fresh trans rebuild, downshift grinding 2nd intermittently.
