Default clutch slippage

i floored it from a stop tonight, power shifted into 2nd, and i was immediately tagging the rev limiter at about 55mph. seconds later i smell clutch. i went to shift to second (thinking i missed it and hit the rev limiter in neutral), but i was in second already. so how the hell did i shift from 1st to 2nd and hit the rev limiter in 2nd at 55? i thought 2nd lasted till about 75?

maybe i really didn't shift all the way into 2nd, and i was actually still in neutral?

thoughts? opinions? what did i screw up? is this common? thanks.
