T56...issues

A friend of mine t-56 is grinding in 3rd gear and hard to either get in or out of 4th,but every other gear is smooth.

what would be wrong with his trans?

Probably has bent or broken shift keys in the 3-4 syncro assembly. Its a common problem with T56 transmissions and can be resolved with a solid key instead of a stamped key in most cases.

It's time for a rebuild. If 3-4 is acting up, then the rest of the trans isn't far behind. In order to do the job right, the trans needs to be completely freshened up and upgraded (like mentioned above). There's not necessarily just a part or two that need to be replaced.
