Shifter not centering itself 2.0
So I got my replacement shifter from MGW for my 02 trans am and the new one still does not center itself. If everything I was told on my last thread is true, then the shifter does all the work and not the transmission. So why Won't my shifter center itself? I'm going crazy here. Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to fix this?

The cup wasn't attached to anything. It just sits there as shown in the video. How is it supposed to be? It never had a stock shifter on it when i got it. It had an aftermarket hurst, the old style (comp plus?)

But I think you'll find your main problem is you're not bolting in the shifter before testing it.

I had the shifter fully bolted in for my initial tests before filming. The old was was also fully bolted in for a week. Could my problem really be a cup that isn't glued down? How could that cause the shifter to not center?

If the shifter cup comes out with no force, you've got a problem. When I replaced mine with a brass fitting, the old plastic stock one had a hell of a time coming out. REquired a screwdriver and prying. Same with the bronze piece going in. Need a hammer to knock it in. Odds are if it comes out easily, the shifter ball is "pulling" it out much like you would if your finger was pulling it out and its binding itself. It'd make sense if 3 different shifters exhibited the same symptom.

I didn't know the cup was coming out and screwing up. Every time I've pulled the shifter off, the cup seems to be just sitting in place like its supposed to be. I'll glue it down tonight. What should I use? Or should I try to go by the GM dealer after work and get another?

I used some jb weld to attach the cup, and the shifter still will not center itself. I'm not sure where to go from here. I was sure that we had it solved, but nope . Where should I go from here?

Feel for you man.. If you saw my vids mine would center itself from left to center but not right to center. I just gave up and adjusted to it. But with yours all idk has to be something in the tranny wish someone knew what it was. Even though my stock shifter worked flawlessly idk I'm baffled.

not sure on the MGM. but my pro50 stopped center after a summer I noticed. I took the top off, and there 2 springs on both side. The shfiter ball has a post thu it the springs go to IIRC. But I found some washer the same OD as the springs that fir into the hole for them, and put 1 or 2 per side to make the springs stiffer. SO it centers itself now. I was talking the Jeremy for RPM the other day about this, he told me to look into it with my facplated trans as a tip. He pulled the springs a little bigger and that worked for him.
Ya if the cup is loose, I can see the ball piching it up and it binding in the side to side movement.

My MGW does the same thing, but only when pulling it left and letting go of it. It will slowly go back but stop short of completely coming back center. It hasn't bothered me any, but it's been that way since I got it so I've gotten used to it. Hope you figure it out and let us know what happens. Maybe that will give me some ideas for mine.

history repeats itself.

I would imagine the MGW has springs that are serviceable too. The factory Hurst does.

Update: driving out to augusta tomorrow morning and the owner is going to personally take a look at the situation and add strong enough springs to get it centering if need be. Talk about customer service. I'll report in tomorrow night with some results.
