Default Need some clutch help on a t-56

So I have a 01 trans am with a stock clutch in it at the moment.
For some reason I have to have a shim behind the slave to make it work correctly if I don't have the shim there I can almost never get it into gear. Once I put the shim in everything works except the clutch won't hold because I'm pushing too much power. From what I hear I shouldent have to have a shim but I don't know how to determine why mine requires it.

Thanks in advance

You must have a hydraulic issue. A shim should not be needed unless the clutch is an incorrect fitment for the car or something.

And if the clutch fingers sit too far out, and you have a shim installed, the release bearing could be pressing lightly on the fingers which would make the clutch more likely to slip.

So exactly what clutch is fitted, and how much power do you have ? ( and how old is the clutch )

I should be making around 450.
The clutch is a stock ls7 clutch(I believe) it has some wear on it but mainly just getting me by until I can buy a nicer clutch. I just want to try and figure out this spacing issue before I get a new one. I know there is a way to take measurements and get it spot on but I don't know that those measurements would be..

There is no reason you should have a shim in there
