Default $300 t56

The questions I asked have been answered so I'm just going to leave this thread alive for any other questions I may have and to somewhat chronicle the process that I take. I've posted the only damage that I have found so far. (Magnets and 6th Gear).

Did they tell you a price? Anything can be fixed, but that trans looks like it was left outside open to the elements for a while anyhow.

1st gear ratio on that T5 listing is incorrect. It's 2.9x

Adding the LT1 front adapter plate will let you use an LT1 flywheel, fork, clutch and hydraulics. The LS1 front adapter plate will prevent clearance for the fork and lack mounting for the fork.

There isn't a lot of depth to the LT1 bellhousing area to begin with, so going with the LS1 front plate wouldn't magically let you run a push clutch. It has less room.

I bought it for $300. The internals in the tailhousing look brand new. But the magnets did have a lot of debri. I got stuck on some snaprings so i'll finish tearing it down today.

I started thinking about it more and came to this same conclusion.

I used all the stock gen 1 clutch, fork, bellhousing. Bought an adapter that bolted between the bellhousing and trans and had a pilot for the throwout bearing. Everything bolted up using a M12 trans from a 2005 GTO.

Considering I'm going from Auto to Manual, I have none of this. The price difference between the bellhousing's used is not much, same with the rest of the items. I would rather not buy a $200+ adapter plate to use old hydraulics and equipment on a newer trans. The only positive to this that I see is that I can use a standard push clutch? I believe. If this adapter replaced the midplate I think it would be a more appealing option.

Also: Total carnage of the $300 T56 so far. All that damage I've found is from the 6th? Gear. I only have the rest of the mainshaft and shift rail to dissassemble after class tomorrow. I have to pick up a torx-plus T40 bolt. I tried using a normal T40 and some heat from a butane torch but it would just not budge..

You need to get a quality Torx 40. It's not a T-40-plus, although I used to use one; if forced into the bolt, they break the head of the bolt. BTDT. The bolts were revised some time in the mid 2000s and are less problematic now but the old ones sucked with a cheap torx bit.

Oh ok. I had just read a thread from searching and everyone was saying use a torx-plus 40 and heat. I'm going to sears after class so i'll take a look af their selection.

I bought a craftsman t40 bit (beefier than my previous). Got a single bolt off and ended up bending most the teeth on it. Glad i get 20% off for being a student and lifetime warrenty.

Mmmmm....guys....They call me Master of the Obvious sometimes, so forgive me...

The transmission in the Craigslist ad is not a T56....It is a T5 (5 speed) from a 3rd Gen f-body. You all know this, right?

The original posting on craigslist had a t56 and t5 listed. He has since then removed the t56 and its information after i purchased it. If that t5 was a wc then i would have picked it up aswell.

It ended up taking me my previous no name t40, a leslie t40 ( i broke 3 teeth off) and 3 craftsman t40's to remove both bolts. Yay for lifetime warranties. It looks like i will need a couple new syncro rings. Almost all gears look new, blocker rings too.

Apex is owned by cooper tools. Their Torx insert bits are great.
How bad are the synchro slider rings?

I hope i can describe this correctly. Where they come to almost a pyramid, the tips are all broken and rough on two sliders. I'll upload some pictures shortly.
