Default t56 re-assembly woes

okay, i have the main case back on the trans and it feels fine: sprins freely, .0005-.0015 end play, etc...

problem is with the shift rail guide pin for the 5/6 rail. one the the "fingers" on the rail seems to be interfering with it, are they prone to falling out of position when putting the case back overtop of the gear stack?

also, do i need to have the shifter guide plate in the case before i put it on the trans (while holding the offset lever in position with the spring loaded ball underneath)?

thanks!

Yes the guide plate must be installed.

Set up the main shift rail. Pin in line with 3-4 fork link.
Set up the 5-6 / R rails on the interlock ring.
Set a spacer under the 3-4 fork. Set a magnet pick up tool on it.

Zip-tie the spring and ball into the offset guide lever tightly so the ball is held in place.
Set that in the case against the guide plate.
Set the case down and as the rail comes through the first opening in the main case, line up the offset guide lever so it goes over the lever. Which gear that is "in" at this time doesn't matter.

Slide the case down most of the way. Use a light to view the 5-6 / R rails and thread that bolt into the 5-6 rail.
Lift the case up enough to yank your 3-4 fork spacer.
Lower the case onto the two guide pins.
Use your light, view the other guide bolt hole and see the interlock ring a little low. Lift up on the 5-6 / R rails to line it up and install your other guide bolt.
Install & torque a couple bolts into the front adapter plate.

Cut zip tie.
Line the guide lever up with the roll pin hole in the shift rail.
Tap the roll pin in just a little bit so you can yank it if need be.
Install the horizontal detent spring-loaded assy.
Hold the 5-6 / R rails inwards with your hand a bit.
Set a punch into the rear end of the shift rail and shift it laterally (1-2 gate over to the R gate.)
You'll be able to shift into and out of gears and know it's right.

thanks, got it last night after i just bit the bullet and pulled the case back off again.

i just held the offset lever inplace against the plate while i was putting the main case on the transmission and got it on the shaft in one shot.

the levers on the rail had fallen off of the mechanism, so a threw a little glob of grease on the end where it contacted the selector on the primary 1-4 rail and it seemed to be enough to hold it in place. shifts normally now.
