Default 2.73's in a M6??

A buddy of mine is trying to talk me into getting 2.73's with my 408ci setup. He raced a local high horsepower Supra and beat it like 3 times with a 383LQ4SS 2 stage setup. Now he has a 346ci H/C setup and he rides around with the 2.73's everyday and claim they are not bad and his gas mileage is better. He said on the spray he never had to worry about shifting too much because of the gears. He claims my future 500rwhp/500rwtq setup with 2.73's would be perfect for spray and would not be so bad NA. What do you guys think?

Sounds good for road racing but what about the drag strip? Wouldn't you lose some time having to turn the engine more to acheive the same amount of wheel revolutions? I once heard someone say that 3.42's were the best all around street/strip gear. I liked them pretty good when my car was stock.

I wouldn't use a 2.73 in hardly any drag racing application. The 3.42 should be fine for sprying on top of that kind of power. If not, try a 3.23 first. Are you worried more about traction or running out of gear?

Right now I have 3.73's and I think they are fine. I street race. No track time in my future.

Track time or no, the way we street race is same as being at the strip--only on the highway. Looks to me like the same principles would still pretty much apply. I agree with BadAndy, try 3.23's or 3.42's. Traction and plenty of gear available, although I would side with the 3.42's since I used to have them with my M6. I could log 20+ mpg (avg) with them babies and still grab a decent 3rd.

too much????!??!

nope. far too little imo. what you need dude is a 12 bolt w/ 4.56's

2.73's = a no 60'n car. out and out turd for street or strip racin. with taller gears and a taller tire, you will not only et better, but you'll mph better as well. not to mention the mechanical advantage you're looking at from the lower 1st gear.

that aside, switching to a 2.73 over a lower gear would net better fuel economy, but the purpose of highway racin is to "walk off" and leave somone else on the fwy right? not to be waitin around for your peak hp and rpm to come around.

sure it'd work, but would it work as well as a 4.10 or lower ratio on the fwy?

race your friend roll and stop and decide for yourself. i'll stick w/ my 4.33's and still spray ya from a 90 punch. dosent bother me in the least.

most people consider 6th gear unuseable with 3.42's now imagine 5th & 6th being nearly unuseable lol...not worth it and with the 1st gear of the manual & 2.73's it would be a turd out of the hole unless your pushing some serious serious hp & tq. Not good in my opinion. It would act like a powerglide with 4 extra gears lol.

Both have their advantages. If you like your gear now, I'd keep it.

2.73's are a terrible gear with an m6. I had 3.23's in a built turd gen, and I couldn't wait to get rid of them. 90 in 2nd gear was not my cup of tea. The rpms went so slow, and you could finish the 1/4 in 3rd. You don't really gain much gas milage, because you won't be able to shift into 6th without lugging until like 80-85mph.

I loved my 3.73 in the car while I had the M6. It was perfect on the highway and rolled out with 500 HP just fine. I wouldn't have traded it for any other gear at the time, nor would I today. I still run a 3.70 with my automatic as well.

Vince, I'm moving this to Manual Transmissions because it's more applicable there.
