the tag on the trans specifies dexron3 , if it is unopened and still has the stock paper blocker rings you should stick to the recommended fluid.

The '98-'00 got the paper blocker rings. '01-'02 were upgraded. In any case I think the Dex 3 is fine. I researched the topic extensively before changing out the fluid in my '99 and went with the Dex 3. Dex 3 and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF are approved by Tremec. The others they just hadn't tested extensively enough. I've read hundreds of reviews here and on the internet. No one had anything negative to say about the ATF that I could find. Others have had good luck with alternatives. But you will find some that felt the alternatives caused problems in their transmissions.

If you have the stock trans never opened the safest bet is to stay with the ATF. When I got my car it had 13 year old/12K miles fluid in it. After swapping it out I felt essentially no difference in the transmission. 3 years later still shifts smooth, even when cold.

The above two posts are probably the best advice.

But, the ONLY "alternative" which ever gave me any trouble in my '99 build date, 'paper' blocker ring T56, was the Royal Purple Synchromax MTF.
The car was basically not driveable with that stuff in the T56 (for me at least), and was dumped the very next day (and ~$75.00 down the drain. ).
