Default t56 to transfer case.

I have a c5 t56 and put an fbody main shaft to shorten it up, but I still have 5 5/8" gap between the t56 and transfer case. I'd like to cut the main shaft about 2-3" so it all fits closer together, but on the main shaft it shows areas without splines. Are those areas weaker than where the splines are? I'm afraid of it ripping in those smooth sections if i were to cut the shaft up to there. Should I leave it or would it be ok to cut up to the smooth lines on the shaft?

Not sure what you're asking ?

If it's too long just cut it.

The smooth areas you're referring to are where circlips would normally reside.

Splined areas have a minor diameter determining shaft size & strength; smooth transitions in the cut of the grooves at that area are important.

The lockring grooves (for GTO reluctor ring) are a point of weakness due to sharp transitions in the metal, but you're not going to do anything about that at this point.

It can be cut; you want to make sure the input gear in the t-case is mated to good splines. But, make sure there's a tangible benefit to it. A trans. that takes an "off the shelf" mainshaft and has a slightly shorter external shift rail is preferable to the alternative.

Thanks for the replies, seems like I'm just going to keep it as is and make a bracket to bolt it all together.
