Default [VR] PPG Sequential Installation and Testing - 474ci Naturally Aspirated C5 Z06

Many of you may already know our customer Eddie Blackwell's 474ci C5 Z06 that we have been competing with in multiple WannaGOFAST 1/2 mile events in the naturally aspirated class over the last few years. This car has evolved from a mild street build to a full blown dedicated 1/2 mile machine to help us test the limits of both the LSX engine in a naturally aspirated form, as well as the C5 Z06 platform in these types of events. Eddie drives his own car at each event, has had landed a best of 179.77mph so far in the standing 1/2 mile with the previous combination that consisted of:
  • Vengeance Racing spec RHS 474ci tall deck short block
  • All-Pro cylinder heads
  • Vengeance Racing spec solid roller camshaft and valvetrain
  • All-Pro single plane intake manifold with a single 4500 throttle body
  • ARH 2" longtube headers
  • RPM pro-shifted TR6060 transmission
  • 15" Weld Racing wheels with Mickey Thompson 275/60/15 tires
  • Stock body/aero/full interior (minus a Kirkey seat)

Over the last year, we have been in the progress of building an all new LSX-based engine measuring out at 451ci that we are planning to install in the coming months. This new engine will host a lot of new upgrades such as a set of MAST Mosez canted valve cylinder heads, dual 4500 throttle bodies, custom stepped longtube headers, and a rotating assembly and valvetrain to support up to 10,000 RPM and upwards of 1,200 - 1,300 HP on the engine dyno!! However, knowing that we needed to capitalize on every second going down the track, the discussion began quickly on moving to a full sequential transmission to cut down on delay time between shifts, as well as keep the car in the powerband for as long as possible.

For this, we reached out to David Gammon and the team at Pfitzner Performance Gearbox (PPG) for one of their sequential TR6060 gearsets and shifter. This new transmission allows us to use 6th gear as our 1:1 gear, keeping RPM drop very low down the track, as well as drastically reduce gear change time to keep the car moving forward through each pass. The gear change is performed without the use of the clutch by aid from a torque-cut module activated by load on the shifter. This allows for a quick drop in timing to engage the next gear, and right back to its operating setting as soon as the change is complete.

Since this system utilizes the standard TR6060 case, there are no additional modifications to the tunnel of the car for fitment, and leaves the standard clutch/torque tube/differential in place. For this car, we are using an RPS triple-disc billet carbon clutch kit to easily take the abuse of this engine. RPM Transmissions in Indiana assisted by making the necessary modifications to the internals of the case to fit this new gearset, as well as setup of the gearset in the transmission. We have used RPM for most all of our in-house transmission and differential builds, and they delivered with excellent results on this project like always! There were a few custom pieces that needed to be made to complete the fitment, but our in-house technician Kevin Kirby was able to handle this with ease.

The results were even better than we had expected! Our first test was a quick drive down the street in front of the shop at part throttle, and then we went straight to the dyno to see exactly how the system reacted at 8,000 RPM. Everyone in our shop stopped for a moment to admire the sound of what can only be described as an INSANELY fast gear change! Our in-house media team from Gearhead Flicks were on-site to capture this moment, and we made a quick video to highlight the system in the YouTube link below:

We are now offering these gearsets for the hardcore enthusiast looking to maximize the potential in their C5, C6, C7, or 5th gen Camaro. TR6060 packages are starting at $23,999.99 for all vehicles, but will vary based on final options selected, as well as type of vehicle. This pricing does not include any other drivetrain modifications such as clutch, torque tube/driveshaft, differential, etc. Please feel free to call us at 678-513-7105 or e-mail sales@vengeanceracing.net to discuss your particular combination and goals, and we will be happy to assist with a full estimate for a build here in house!

That's what it is originally designed around, pricing is a bit bonkers though. Odd in this case about 6th being 1:1 ? Presumably that's a custom setup ?

Yeah, we talked about it so long ago that I forgot about that fact.

Mountune just told me that Malcolm Wilson Motorsports recently switched BACK to the XTrac units from the Sadev boxes for their Fiesta WRC's 'boxes. (I wonder WHY?)

Could be a load of reasons, reliability, cost, ease of fitment/removal, clutches, diff options, ratios, shift mechanism, sponsorship
