Default School me on speed shifting

I'm fairly new to this concept. I know my Cobalt SS is designed to no lift shift from the factory but what about a T56? Next time the car goes down the track, it will have a Viper spec T56 and the car dynoed 502 rwhp on a Mustang dyno. How harmful would doing this be? How much higher should I set the limiter to effectively speed shift?

The car has a previous best of 11.56@122 shifting normally. Since then, the heads have been ported and tires switched from 275/50/15 MT ET Street Radials to 28x11.5-15 ET Streets. It has also probably lost a bit of weight. I'm hoping for 10.90s

What is your definition of speed shifting? No lift shifting?

A car that is designed to do it uses the clutch pedal switch as a signal to cut power in anticipation for the shift. If you have a built rear, trans and clutch they'll probably be fine but control of the car will be a big issue.

OK, gotcha.

When you said M6 I thought you meant a gearbox, NOT THE car.

You did not say the 'SMG' moniker as the NAME of the gearbox in your initial post, but yes, I should have caught on when you mentioned NO clutch pedal.

As I get older I feel power shifting like that is a bad idea it's just so hard on parts. Unless this is purpose built to do it and you got the coin to fix the trans...

It makes an awesome sucking sound when you powershift into 5th instead of 3rd !! Sucking sound coming from your wallet that is.

It can be done.

Although ratios arent always great as BMW have a habit of using very tall diff ratios with short overdrives.

+1......on my back to back runs i can't really see a improvement on these cars speed shifting. Sometimes it just unsettles the car or you miss the shift and all that abuse is for nothing.

A 2 step or torque cut device will allow you to do this without breaking anything and is actually easier on the trans.

those devices that cut ignition cause unburnt fuel and oxygen to enter the exhaust system, and react there causing an explosion which can raise exhaust gas pressure enough to pop open the exhaust valves, causing them to touch the piston/float and ruining your engine's day. The engine needs a good strong spring if you want to do this kind ignition cut.

I leave all that crap out of a daily driver. ignition cuts are for race cars, max performance, not the kind of thing you want to use if it is your only vehicle.

Here is my friend shifting his old c6 corvette. Some of the fastest shifting I've ever seen. It's very impressive.

That C6 video rocks. How do you shift a stock (?) shifter-trans like that. My C5 is super slow. Even with a short throw shifter, it just takes time for the syncros to work.
I'm a road racer so I try not to force it too much. I have tried several trans fluids, Red Line MT, Royal Purple, Pennzoil Syncromesh, none of them make my trans that fast. Maybe I just need to slam it into gear. Any ideas from drag racers?? You guys know how to bang gears.

OP, I wouldn't do it. It's the type of things a lot of younger guys do. I may have done it once or twice years ago in my 5.0 Mustang. I'm not singling anybody out, but it's a classic reason why cars do things like lose second gear. Can it be done? Of course. Is it meant to be? No. There is a lot to be said for how a car is driven by its owner/driver. A car that needs a new trans at 40K miles is not being treated nicely when these trannys can easily go for over 200K without being touched. Having said that, it is fun and it's your money!
