Default Short Shifters

I was looking into short shifters, and i know it all comes down to preference. I want to shift so hard that the mustang in the next lane feels it!!! but I'm having some issues with the t56, feel like i can't shift fast! So I heard a short shifter may help out! i already have a upgraded clutch master cylinder, and it made it a lot better, but i still want to shift it faster! Any recommendations?? if i can't cut shift time with the t56, ill probably build a th400.

Most likely, but that depends on what shifter you have in the car now. If you are running the factory shifter, a new shifter will give you the feel and control you are looking for. A short stick on that shifter should help you with speed.

The very first thing I did when my car was delivered from the factory was replace that damn shifter. Best thing I did ever - and I didn't get the greatest shifter. Then I put a short stick on it - second best thing I did ever.

This is the latest thread we have going on regarding shifter developments: https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...available.html

+1 MGW here. They're pretty stiff when new but once they break in, they shift very well.

the stock clutch, pressure plate, is not friendly to speed shifts. While a shorter throw aftermarket shifter will help, you need to get a aftermarket clutch (non GM). Many use/like the Monster

I disagree with this. We, or at least I, have no idea what the OP is running. He could be completely stock and just wanting to shift a little faster. I have bolt on's and 76k miles on my 99 and find that when speed shifting, it is usually driver error that slows me down more than anything else. With that being said, I just picked up the MGW shifter and have put about 350-400 miles on it so far. The shifter feels great so far and the throw is drastically shorter than the stock, non Hurst shifter. However, speed shifting with the MGW shifter is actually slower than stock for me, due to the stiffness. I do think that after another couple hundred miles it should loosen enough that it will be faster than stock. It loosens up noticably with every drive it seems, so dont be too worried when it is super stiff out of the box. With all that being said, I much prefer the MGW, even though as of yet it is slower than stock. I spoke with a well known tuner a week ago about shifters and what he thought, he recommended the B&M for speed shifting, for what thats worth.

Biggest problem is the stock master cylinder. I had stock clutch/pressure plate/everything else with tick master and MGW shifter and could speed shift easily - not so much with stock MC. Aftermarket clutch isn't going to help when the stock MC isn't pushing enough fluid to fully disengage the clutch.

I like the MGW. Agree it is a bit stiff at first, but works its way ok. I like the heavier centering springs to avoid the money 3-2 shift.

If it's a track only car, you could also try shimming the detent with a 0.050-0.100" copper washer gasket. The potential downside is that the car can come OUT of gear easier just driving around. If it's track only, it should get rid of that almost two-step feel of your shift - you know where it sort of stops in the middle just briefly and then drops into gear.

The hinson looks really good, but I've been super happy with my MGW.

MGW was the gold standard on here for along time and was what I planned on getting. When I have extra cash I am going to give the Hinson a try.

Another vote for MGW. Physically, it's very short and much more sporty looking (think what a shifter looks like for a miata). The shift throws are also much shorter and more precise feeling as well. Like others have said, it is a bit stiff at first, but within about 50-100 miles, it'll either loosen up, or you'll be used to it.

My thought is there is only so much double paper syncros can do in slowing down a stock sized clutch.

In my swap project, I'm running the GTO triple carbon syncros on three 8 inch full faced discs and have datalogged 3/10's of a second shift, that clutch switch on to clutch switch off and it's at the top of the pedal.

I'm using one of the eBay quick ratio shifters combined with a short throw stick. I really enjoy the feel of it
