Race inside input shaft

I'm having an issue right now, something is causing the input shaft to be too far away from the 3/4 synchro, causing the slider to slide too far and lock into gear when the keys start to come out. Any ideas?
Shims are done between the front case adapter place and the outer race for the input shaft big bearing. Follow the factory rebuild guide and figure out what thickness you need. You should be well under 0.100".
Shifting an unassembled unit and hoping you shift it just enough to not pop the keys out is accomplishing nothing. Clock the retainer spring correctly, billet keys are a good thing and put it together.
