A pilot bearing is no different from any other bearing. If made from good quality steel and properly lubricated, they will work well for a very long time. As state above, when the input shaft pilot tip is essentially the inner race for the bearing, it will take the damage when the bearing fails. There is a reason the auto manufactures went away from oil impregnated bushings and toward bearings. If the bushing was superior, GM would still be using it.

Tremac, the maker of the transmission, specs the bearing....which is why the car manufacturer uses them from my understanding

Tremec doesnt make the bearing though. And the NV trans in trucks also use bearings.

I thought the same thing, and when I put in my first clutch, I used a bushing. It lasted about 1500 miles before it was tore up and making noise. Bearing in after, no issues since. Maybe luck, or just some are better than others.
