Default ideal slip yoke length

i googled this and saw that u want ur slip yoke to be somewhere between 3/4" to 1" from bottoming out inside the trans. this may sound stupid, but i assume u want the same for the driveshaft side, because if u have 1/2" on the driveshaft side that could crash into the tail housing, defeating the purpose of that 3/4 or 1 inch on the side inside the trans. so lets talk my current setup.....

im assuming i have a correct length driveshaft sold to me by a sponsor, i need a 32 spline th400 yoke for my t56 (has a 32 spline ssr shaft) so i just wanna double check its all good. i bought a yoke assuming i may need to get it cut down, i put it inside, and it bottomed out with about 3/4" left on the u joint side of the yoke. i marked on the yoke and it went in about 4 1/8". so subtract 7/8" from that, then i should want the yoke to go in about 3 1/4". now add 1" to that for the extra space needed on the u joint side and that means i want the spline side to be 4" long. and then once u have ur yoke picked out, u put it in the trans, load up the suspension, and then measure for your driveshaft right? didn't want this question to get this far but figured why not learn how to double check my driveshaft is the correct length.

Check Dennys Driveshaft website...there is a section about "measuring"

yea they said u want 3/4" to 1" for slip so i was just wondering if that was what u want on the barrel side and the u joint side of the yoke

The "barrel" part of the front yoke that is splined and goes into the back of the tranny wants to have 3/4"-1" exposed out the back of the tranny so there is room for the DS to move "into" the tranny when the rear end moves up/down for suspension travel. You would want the length of the splined yoke that goes into tranny not to bottom out inside the tranny if it did go 3/4-1" further into the tranny

ok so basically what ur saying is in a perfect world, u want around 7/8" of room to spare inside the trans and a hair less than that exposed outside the trans. that way if it were to overly slip, u will hit the tail housing instead of internal trans. correct?

^^^yes. basically you would want the yoke to bottom out against the rear housing vs internal.....although you never want it to bottom out against anything. 3/4" typically gives enough room for the yoke to move in/out of the transmission because of rear suspension travel without anything hitting

keep in mind the 3/4"ish that is exposed is measured from end of rear housing...not the end of the rubber cup on the tail housing as it sticks out about 1/4" with the suspension fully loaded
