Default Should master cylinder rod have play?

Hey guys. This is probably a silly question but I’ve never changed a clutch master cylinder before so I’m a little unfamiliar with the parts. I ordered the new MC and it arrived yesterday, but the metal rod which connects to the clutch pedal will wobble where it sticks out of the MC body. Is this normal due to needing to move with pedal travel, or should there not be any play as the rod moves in & out of the MC body?

Thanks again for entertaining my newb question.

the rod just pushes against the plunger in MC, its not attached to plunger. The movement is normal

Sounds like the play in the rod is normal then. Thanks for the info!

It probably doesn't matter, but I'm going to put the car in neutral while I'm changing the MC. Seems like the logical thing to do.

Once the MC is mounted...the rod will not have any "play" in it

But more importantly, the rod should in no way at all be actuating the master when at rest or the clutch will never work correctly.

So whilst the rod should not be loose, even worse it should not be applying pressure and pushing on the piston of the master at rest.
