Burned T56 question

Burned T56 question I'm new to the site. I've done some looking on this site and google and haven't found any good info. I found a T56 out of an LS1 F body that caught on fire at a junk yard. They want $600 for it. Is it worth it, or should I just get one off Craigslist for $2000? What type of internal damage should I look for?

That really depends whether the box was good to start with....and how bad the fire was etc.
It could be totally scrap on all levels, or it might be ok. You'd need to see it and the car before making that assessment as to whether the fire may have caused harm
When a new Magnum is a bit over $3k...it would seem hard to buy an unknown used T56 for $2k, although if you specifically need F fitment, then converted Magnums are a bit more expensive.

It won't be internal damage, it will be to the case,, Aluminum gets wonky somewhere just past 500F (lots of variables so this is a "for instance" statement.. )
I'd check the input and output seals first, if the rubber is still intact that's a good sign, same with the shifter,, pulling the shifter lets you see inside to a small extent,, are the rubber and plastic bits torched? Does the fluid smell cooked?
What do the external connections if any look like? Like the Speedo sensor, backup light switch connector etc.. all clues as to condition..
