Default SLP / Hurst Shifter "Exploded" Internally!

So I took my '98 Z28 out for a romp yesterday and noticed my SLP / Hurst shifter developed a MUCH louder rattling than it normally has. Got home thinking I just had a lose bolt somewhere. Checked all the bolts and everything was good and tight, but noticed the shifter had some excessive play in it. Removed the shifter to inspect and when I took the rubber boot off that exposes some of the shifter internals, discovered chunks of what I originally thought was metal in the shifter. After fiddling with it, also noticed the chucks can work their way to come out the bottom too...VERY scary for my T56! I put a magnet on the chunks, and they're not magnetic, so they're either aluminum or hard plastic. I didn't find any of the chunks in my tail housing where the shifter mounts fortunately.

This is the the SLP shifter SLP sold back in the day for $99. Always thought it was build by Hurst. I bought it very early after buying the car, so the shifter is probably 20 years old. I put the stock shifter back in for now and everything is good...just forgot how sloppy the OEM shifter really is!

Anyone ever heard of this happening with an SLP or Hurst shifter? I haven't, so I'm puzzled! Any idea what "exploded"?

The aftermarket Hurst and OEM upgrade shifter were the same except for an angle in the pivoting stick, and cosmetics.
Hurst, or the eBay guy who sells parts for them may have parts. Disassembly isn't tough.

The aftermarket Hursts were made of aluminum. I always thought they were re-buildable, many other Hurst shifters, but I don't see the service offered and it also looks like they are set up to be "refreshed" simply by popping in new springs: So, your problem may be terminal.

So I went looking for warranty info and discovered Hurst shifters have a lifetime warranty. I found my receipt for my Hurst/SLP shifter in my glove box and I bought it on 1/4/00. I sent Hurst a pic of the shifter and a pic of the receipt and asked if they will honor the lifetime warranty on the shifter. I'd rather have it repaired than replaced. Worse that can happen is they say no...

Can you post a picture here? I just bought the spring rebuild kit for mine and popped the parts in this week. The whole thing seems like a pretty simple mechanism. I didn't see any aluminum parts in there. The only small parts were seats for the springs.

This is the Hurst/SLP shifter...it’s different from the Billet Plus, not sure how different internally...

I think the stock Hurst has a two piece part, where the throat of the body and bottom plate are separate parts. The Billet Plus is all one machined piece of metal.

Where were the aluminum parts and junk? Did you try unscrewing the 4 Allen screws on the top of the shifter that expose the springs? Taking the springs and the spring base plates out will expose a lot of the internal areas.

See the chunks coming out? This is out the bottom of the shifter and these could fall into the transmission which I’m sure can’t be good!

Top of shifter with rubber boot removed. No Allen head bolts to remove to get inside...

Close-ups of chunks visible from top of shifter.

Chunks removed already. They’re not magnetic, but not sure if they’re metal or hard plastic...

Another close-up from top with chunks visible...

Interesting. It looks like either dried up grease or an outer layer/coating of metal is coming off one of the wearing surfaces. Time for a new shifter, for sure.

I just heard back from Hurst and they’re going to hook me up! They confirmed they built the shifter for SLP, but It’s not rebuildable, nor do they have any replacements to send me. However, they agreed to offer me, as a goodwill gesture, their Billet/Plus Shifter 3915060 as a one time replacement. I accepted!

i couldn’t ask for better customer service!

I offered of course, but they don’t want it back. They’re just sending me a new Billet/Plus.

I have that shifter too, but I only used it briefly after I got it around 01, decided I preferred the stock one. The SLP had some galling on the round part, from brand new. I tried to sand it out, not completely successful. My impression was that the OEM shifter was definitely better quality. I got a couple things from SLP back when that had smallish quality issues.

EDIT: I should say though that the paint job that SLP did on the hood and spoiler for the SS was much better than the standard GM paint on the rest of the car.

Brand new Hurst Billet Plus Shifter arrived yesterday! I’m impressed with their customer service! Especially on a product I bought 19 years ago, that’s no longer made, and the company that was supposed to warranty has changed hands multiple times!
