One thing I didn't check was if the nipple at the end of the input shaft was bottoming out or not. I also didn't measure the input shaft after I got the transmission back from getting it worked to provide final dimensions.
If you have the spacing, and if you may sell your transmission in the future... it may be easiest to use the spacer. If I went the spacer route, I would measure to see if the nipple will be fully inserted in the pilot bearing for proper support/alignment.
Another option would be to use the L86 crankshaft if you still have the motor apart.
