Looking for some help. I’m looking at this T56 Magnum to buy. Guy is a few towns over selling it for a friend. He doesn’t know a lot about it other than it’s new and never been installed. Anyone able to glean some info based on the pics alone...appreciate it. I’m looking to mate it with a 5.3 from a 2003 GMC Sierra. Thanks!
For starters it is not new, it may be new to him, possibly a rebuilt unit? They never came painted black. You need more info and pictures to verify it is a LS and not a LT style transmission, even then there are only a few external checks you can do to verify it is in working order without some disassembly.
The black colour baffled me and I couldn’t find any info if such a thing existed. Thing is I’m in Canada and this is pretty close to me at a not bad price. I haven’t pulled the trigger and won’t after reading your input. Plus he's been a brutal communicator which always makes me uneasy.
If his box has a tag, that's helpful.
The Magnum was introduced w/ 2 GM versions, 2 Ford versions.
First GM versions carried service numbers on the tag:
TUET 11009 2.66 / 0.63
TUET 11012 2.97 / 0.50
TUET-16885 2.97 / 0.63 (I think this tag # is correct. It was introduced a couple years ago)
The newer Magnum-F has zero benefit in your application over the T56 Magnum "standard" version, which is what you're shopping.
Black is non-OEM. Some people paint new things, I guess.
