Changing the clutch myself for the first time, '94 TransAm
#21
I've been wrestling with the transmission for hours, I can only ever get it about 1/2 from the bellhousing. The clutch alignment tool slides in effortlessly but then gets a little stuck when I try to pull it back out. Gonna try to realign the disk I guess.

FYI, the slave rod seat (that concave section on the fork) needs to be in line with the bolts so I ended up having to push the fork in towards the throwout bearing a little more.
Just got the car buttoned back up and took it for a few laps around the block. Never got over 2500 rpm or 25 mph so it's possible I'll run into vibration issues since I didn't have it balanced before installing. That's the main thing I'm dreading. Shifts *so* smooth though. Clutch was just barely starting to get a slight chatter starting from a stop in 1st but I'll drive it more tomorrow.
The most pleasant surprise: it goes into reverse easier than it ever has. Used to take some muscle on a good day but now it just glides in. Love it!

Key is getting the car up high enough off the ground and on jack stands to get the transmission out. I drained the fluid from the transmission as to not make a mess from removing the driveshaft but once you get the TA ,the DS, center console and shifter removed and disconnect the harness connections from the transmission and the line from the clutch master to the clutch slave it should be about ready to come out. I was able to remove the bolts holding the transmission to the bellhousing on the LS1 car so I didn't have to fight the bellhousing. You'll want to position a floor jack under the transmission and possibly strap it down with a ratchet strap prior to removing the crossmember but from there you should be able to navigate it out. It certainly helps to have another set of hands to aid in removal though.
