Default CAGS and fuel economy

How does CAGS avoid the gas guzzler tax? This 2002 is my first manual and i'm trying to learn exactly how to drive when to shift for max fuel economy, i think i've already got max accell down. This premium and CA gas prices are combining to make things hard on my wallet.

because it shoots the rpm WAY down.... less fuel is used.

i personally go 1-3-5-6 but have 3.70's and soon to have 4.30's

Several things to note. CAGS works with input from temp. throttle position and vehicle speed. It resets itself every time you stop. It will not engage at a "brisk" throttle position. It will not engage when the engine is cool. If you never come to a comlete stop, it will not engage. If you burry the throttle, it will not engage. If you shift late( at a relatively high RPM) it will not engage.or you can skip 2nd .
