Sometimes I go after them with a little hammer/chisel work... just to knock them loose. I have a nice set of SnapOn transmission snap ring pliers that were made for those rings, though... If you're using cheap snap ring pliers, umm, good luck.
Been there, done that, threw the freakin' things in the trash.If you do decide to try to knock them loose with a tap of the hammer, be forewarned... you could damage your mainshaft. I had a stuck snap ring... I tapped it... it moved... but it took a part of the mainshaft with it (small chunk of the surface where a roller bearing rides). Oops. A $200 mainshaft later, and it was back in my car.
