Default Dropping the t56???

Ok guys i did a search first for what i thought would be an easy find but didnt find anything. My 98 Z28 M6 is having synchro problems and i need to get it fixed. I can however save myself a lot of money if i drop it myself. Does anyone have a write up with pictures that could assist me? I have a manual but it would be a lot easier if someone had one online with pictures and detailed directions. Also... my throwout bearing seems to be dead. How difficult is that to change. Btw... i'll have to do all this work on jack stands as i dont have lift access. By the time i get started i will have power tools though.

Much thanks appreciated to all that help,

Ben

It's really not *that* bad. Drain the tranny, remove the torque arm and driveshaft, remove the Y-pipe (if it's in the way), remove the shifter, remove the crossmember, let the trans droop down (maybe put a jack stand with a piece of wood under the engine oil pan to help support the motor), detach the clutch hydraulic line, unbolt the trans from the bellhousing, and pull it out. I've done it on jackstands, you need to get the car pretty high in order to slide the trans out from under the car. I used to roll the trans on to a piece of plywood and drag the plywood out.

Back when my car was close to stock, the above took about 3 hours. Now that I've moved the torque arm, gone to no Y-pipe (bullets), it takes about 20 minutes (with my lift ).

Definately put a jack and a big piece of wood under the oil pan when you unbolt the crossmember. It is not a good thing to have the motor hanging on the front motor mounts.
IF you replace the throwout bearing, don't depress the clutch pedal
unless you have a spline tool installed in the clutch disc and pilot bearing. Without a spline tool, the clutch disc will drop down, and you will never get the trans back in.
Good luck. P.S. After years of getting debris in my eyes, I always wear safety glasses when I am under the car on a creeper.

If you go to McLeod Clutch Install at install university they show and explain the tranny removal as well as the clutch...

I can pull my tranny out in about an hour or so.. Its actually really easy if you ask me. I just get under it and rest it on my chest.. then put it on the ground. Putting it back in isnt quite as easy though.. for me at least..

probably, bengee....but you'd also probably have a few cracked ribs LOL
when we dropped my trans, a buddy of mine did that method and i helped him rest it on the ground off his chest.
but he's like a 6' 250lb farm boy, so he's probably wrastled bigger steer

one thing i did to move the trans around was to drop it on a big, thick piece of slick/glossy cardboard. Worked like a charm, dragging the cardboard out
