Default Tranny or Clutch problem?

I've been noticing lately that second gear has been acting up. Today, I started up the car, went out my driveway, and when I tried to shift to second gear(I know about the skip shift thing), I pushed the clutch in and it just grinded as I tried to put it into second. I had the clutch pushed in, all the way. Now a week before today I was racing, and when I tried to shift to second, I thought it went but it didn't and when I let off the clutch, it just started hitting the rev limiter, I quickly recovered but I have missed second in daily driving, and I KNOW I have the clutch pushed in, all the way. Could this be a tranny or clutch problem? Its the stock clutch and its still good, picks up right off the floor. Any tips?

When you say releases right off the floor, is it fully releasing? Can you hold the pedal down & shift into 1st & reverse no problem(not moving)? If so you prolly have a trans problem.

I can shift into 1st and reverse no problem when I am not moving, when I am backing up, I have to wait till the car isn't moving to put it in first again.

If it's grinding into 2nd all the time your gonna need to remove & tear down the trans & inspect it.

Well it doesn't do it all the time, but everyonce in a while it acts up. Thats the first time I have missed second in a race, but I had noticed before that race, the clutch hadn't been acting normal. Sometimes when I shift, you think it went in, then when you let off the clutch it hits teeth and pops out of gear, these SOMETIMES are like once a week. Its annoying enough for me to ask though. Any other thoughts? Thanks for your help so far!

my second gear grinds at times too... every once in a while..its weird... im on the stock clutch too... 27k i wonder if its on its way out.....

I'm not sure, mine has 57K and I don't go out drag racing from lights on the street feathering the clutch, dropping the clutch, etc, I get in traffic sometimes though and I have to keep inching up, then the clutch smells just a little bit. It hasn't done it in a while.

mine grinds once in a while as well.... if im doing 40 and want to drop down to 2nd i grind like hell...my lt1 never did this.

If it only grinds in one gear, it's more likely the trans. (synchros). You can't do it when racing but if you double clutch you'll avoid the grind in normal driving - at least until you have the synchros checked.

how much would replacing a synchro cost? i think i have the same problem

a rebuild with labor is around $500-600k, i had the same problem before i put in my new clutch now afterward shifts like nobodies business, i found a pilot bearning gone all to hell during the install. WS6speedemon, i'd take your tanny out and check that pilot bearing. if you need a lift or any help i'd be glad to lend a hand seeing that we're both tarheels and all

thanks 12stones, I'll keep it in mind. Replacing the synchros is a 500$ job? I think I might just live with my problem. After all, we always have a 2 out of 3 match.
