Default Question about the Pro 5.0 now that I have it...

I put in my Pro 5.0 yesterday and have a couple questions:

1. I reused the lower shift boot, but didn't cut it to fit just under the upper "ring" on the shifter. Should I cut it and have the top of the shifter inside the car rather then under the boot?

2. The spring that forces the stick into the center position (between 3 and 4) isn't as strong as my stock shifter. Is there a way to tighten that spring? I saw that there were 2 screws on each side of the Pro 5.0, would tightening the one on the left side tighten the spring?

Otherwise, great shifter. Worth the money? ....eh, if it saves my transmission b/c of the stops, then yes. Comfort/perfomance wise, just put a shorter stick on your factory shifter.

Not sure if you can adjust the spring or not. I'm not really sure why yours would feel softer compared to the stock one. Both my 01 Z and my 00 SS have had the pro 5.0 and it was a huge difference from that crap factory Hurst. They also centered just fine.

As far as the boot - I didn't cut it on my 01, but I did cut it for my 00. Does it matter? Probably not.

Yeah i donno why it's not as tight. If i pull the stick in between the 1 and 2 gears, and let it go, it won't spring back fully into the center 3/4 position. This is really annoying because I think one of the biggest things that helps the 2/3 shift and even the helps prevent downshifting accidentally from 3 to 2. Maybe I'll call Pro 5.0, if they're nice people they'll replace it

Maybe you have the bolts too tight. Try backing them off a bit and just snugging them up enough so they won't back out on their own and see how it feels then.

You can "adjust" it to where the stick will center itself if you let it go. What you can do is take apart your stock shifter (there should be four 10mm bolts at the base, under a rubber cover), then you'll see a spring on each side. Take out one of the springs, and take it to your local hardware store. Buy a spring that will fit inside the stock spring (two, one for each side), and cut a couple of coils off if you need so it can be the same height as the stocker. Now, just take apart your pro 5.0 and do the same thing, and install the two smaller springs (one on each side). This should fix your problem. The pro 5.0 seems to need stronger springs for the stick to center itself.

My thought would be that the screws in the side it anything would need to be tightened, increasing the pressure of the spring. But then again I don't know how the inside of that thing works. Going to call Pro5.0 tomorrow and ask them, will post results

The rattling is normal and can be remedied (sp?) by making a paper gasket and placing it at the base of the shifter. To make it center back up again, look at my post above.

I have heard that the OEM Hurst has the best self centering of all the shifters out there. I had a Pro 5.0 shifter in my 98 Cobra and it was pretty good. I do remember the shifter being very notchy though and for the first few weeks I constantly mis-shifted (by mis-shift I mean I wasn't getting into the gate all the way before I release the clutch and it would not go into the next gear or it would grind).

I"m assuming the paper gasket will act like a buffer? RTV is too keep the fluid from seeping out.. This paper thing is somthing new and you'd have to make one yourself as i'm unaware of a paper gasket for them.. I could be wrong though..

Yeah, you'd have to make your own paper gasket. Get a roll of paper gasket material from your local Pep Boys and use your stock shifter as a template to cut out the gasket. Then just install it between your shifter base and the tranny. This will quiet down the rattling at high rpm by quite a bit.

Wow, I have never seen so much discussion over the springs in a shifter. I have a Pro 5.0 in my t56=feels fine. You were speaking about the springs preventing 3-2 downshift when going 3-4---How do you hold the shifter handle when shifting 3-4? I hit 1-2 with my hand on the pass. side of the **** and 3-4 with my hand turned slightly on the driver side. I think you may be pulling the shifter towards you on the 3-4- This would cause you to go into 2nd----Just a thought.

The weak spring return of the Pro 5.0 has been well known for many years. Additionally, all of my friends that have owned the shifter experienced the same weak gate spring as well.

Ever since I installed my shifter it has had a weak center return as well. If I remember correctly, I did some searching into this and came up with the following: [[ The Fix ]] I believe that Harlan posted somewhere that to remedy the weak spring return, simply swap out the factory Hurst springs into the 5.0 shifter. I tried to do swap springs a couple of weeks ago when I had time, but the cheapo allen wrenches I "had" broke when I was trying to disassemble the base. A few days ago, I bought some high quality allens and will try it in a few days and then will let you all know how it turned out.
