Is there some kind of trick to it? I've removed the tranny, and removed the 8 bolts around the bellhousig... but it won't budge. Car's an 01.

There are 2 alignment pins that hold the bellhousing on. Put a little *** into it and it should come off. You might have to work around the edges with a flat tip screw driver to get it started moving.

Ahh, excellent. I didn't know how hard I should pry on it, and didn't know how much flex in the housing was acceptable.

How hard can I pry on it without having to worry about it cracking it? I've pulled pretty hard, and the bottom flexes out but the top doesn't budge.

I use a wide flat prybar. It is a real pain in the *** the first time you do it. Just have to get the pry bar up in close to the dowel an wack it in a little further with a hammer. Then pry till it gets loose enough to wack the prybar in further. It will come off. Make sure to put some anti seaze on the dowel before reassembly to make it easier to remove in the future.

I actually had to use a block of wood and a hammer to get mine off. We got the drivers side off the dowel, but the passenger side was the bitch. It took a little effort, but by placing the block against the inside edge and hitting down on it, it jogged the dowel loose. Ended up with one dowel staying in the motor, and the other coming out with the bellhousing.

Yeah I got it off, but it took a coiuple of hours of violently shaking the car. Sockets and a rubber mallet proved to be the most effective solution!
