Default Muscling Into Reverse

Just replaced my Transmission- a $3,600 mistake. Buy used car, put on 1800 miles, and then boom! One night you can barely shove it into first. But this does not pertain to my question. I read a related article, the "reverse celeniod", which to the authors discription made shifting into reverse quite the problem- sometimes taking two hands. (Have yet to find it this hard). In myfirst T-56 that is now KIA, it was a little hard to put it into reverse. A friend of mine at a local auto shop thought just by soldering a piece of wire on either SKIP SHIFT wires would solve the annoying factory gas-saver, but it did not. Afterwards, I found ti hard to put in reverse, at this, he said "Just put it in first, and then throw it into reverse." This did open up reverse, but SKIP SHIFT was still a nuisance, and now I added another. Months went by, no problem, and then the T-56 blew. My real question is, in my new T-56, I still have the same reverse shifting problem- still tough. Put in a B&M Ripper- possibly a problem? Dont know- looking for help.

Can you get somebody to read the codes from your computer?

If you can't, try clearing the computer and see if that helps.

I need to bring this up to the top. I replaced my clutch and now it's a bitch to put it into reverse. All the other gears are fine. What does the skip shift have to do with putting it in reverse. I thought this thread might have the answer I'm looking for. Thanks, Ruben

Reverse lockout disconnected?

Is it harder to put in reverse with the car off? If it's the same as when the car is on, your reverse lockout isn't working.

What does it mean if you can't put the car in reverse at all when the car is off?

I'm having the same problem after getting a new clutch installed. Is there a way to adjust this, or am I stuck taking it back to the place that installed it?

Hey Pheonix, I had the same problem with my tanny. Did you check the fuses under the hood? There's a 20 amp engine sensor fuse in the lower fuse box on the right as you open the hood. When you open the box it should be in the top right corner if you look at it from the driver's side. After I changed the blown fuse I had no problems shifting into reverse

well it's hard to put it into reverse when the car is off and when it's on. It was always pretty easy to put it into reverse before I put the new clutch in so I know that something is wrong. And if it was the clutch, why would all the other gears work fine. That's why I thought it was something electrical but I didn't know where any sensors were to check it out. Where is this reverse lockout sensor at. I'll check the fuses under the hood like it was suggested.

Can someone tell me where this reverse lockout sensor is at so I can check it out and replace it if this is the problem.

That's pretty much impossible. It is QUITE hard to get into reverse with the car off though. Takes 2 hands for me, personally, and I am a big guy.

The back upper solenoid for reverse needs to be connected. It's energized when the car stops rolling allowing you to easily shift into reverse. If it's disconnected the trans thinks its rolling and tries to prevent accidental engagement of reverse. It's completely separate from the skip shift solenoid. My car had the skip shift kit on the reverse solenoid and the car was a bear to put in gear.
Hope this helps

I had this problem too. I sent mine to transmission specialist to be rebuilt in indiana, and the the car goes in reverse with one hand as easy as it goes into 1st.. its frightening because I didn't think that was possible, but it really does feel that good.

Peace,
josh
