01-02 master cylinder with 98-00 slave?

01-02 master cylinder with 98-00 slave? My clutch pedal is very soft and shifting is very notchy. Bleeding doesn't seem to fix the problem so I'd like to try replacing the master cylinder on my '98 before I pull the tranny to look at the slave and the clutch itself. Would the upgraded master work with the old slave? Everything is stock right now.
