My goal for when I put the LS1 into my truck is atleast 500 rear wheel HP. When I do the conversion I will also be doing the T56 conversion. The truck is an auto right now. Will a stock T56 hold that much power? I dont know what the torque numbers will be. If not what is suggested to make the T56 handle it?
-thanks,

you'll have to upgrade the clutch and hydraulics for sure to handle that power. the actual tranny itself might hold that power for a little while but an upgraded one would be best. that's a very involved and costly project you're talking about there.

Depends on the weight of the truck and how well you get power to the road. BTW Transmissions/ drivelines don't care about HP , they only see torque. If the truck produces alot of wheel hop( it will unless you have re-engineered it), You will have more than just tranny probs.

hp & tq are functions of one another....torque is the main thing that truck needs, and a t56 probably isn't the best bet for it in that case. a 4l80 might be a better option, or a richmond M5 tranny with a custom 9" rearend and 4 link setup would be tha **** in a new reg cab step side truck with some tubs, 4link and huge slicks and about 800 to the tires.

I have been running a T56 in my 1990 454SS truck for about 4 years now. The motor was built by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering & dynoed at 505 HP & 535 ft/lbs of torque. The tranny has held up rather well for the abuse it has taken. 3rd gear has been a little tough lately, I believe the 3rd gear syncro is going bad (common on early T56 trannies - mine is a 1995 Z28). I can tell you that I only started running slicks this past summer & it is still together. I do expect to upgrade the syncros & put in the 3rd gear steel fork. By the way, I run a SPEC Stage III clutch for an LT1 camaro. It sucks for the street.

Why does it suck for the street? I deffinately want the truck to be manual and I deffinately want some power but still with decent gas mileage. I plan on converting it to 2wd from 4wd as well.

Ok I have talked with a few more f-body people and they tell me that the transmission will hold up to all my goals even though its a truck and I might get wheel hop, extra weight etc... they say its all in the clutch. That if anything goes it will be the clutch. Does anyone else agree with that?
thanks,
Mike
