If giving it the two handed strangler mangler grip and turning that bitch to the left wont work. I suggest a tericloth towel and a giant monkey wrench!

If you are just changing the shifter, you can remove the handle/ stick at the shifter as an assembly. Swap the shifter out and re-install the stick/**** assembly. If you are swapping handles and re-using the ****, it may be easier to separate the **** from the stick with it off the car( vise & strap wrench work well and dont marr the ****).

I had a bitch getting mine off too, I grabbed on and twisted that thing hard to the left and after about five tries, it finally broke loose. Try a thick cloth and set of vise grips for leverage. Good luck!

Another thought to consider using my disassembly suggestion. If you reef on the ball without supporting the stick handle base, you could break the rubber isolation bond. This is not a problem if you are not going to reuse the stick. It could also damage the shifter internals- again not a problem if you are replacing the part. You will then have to take the broken stick to a vise and disassemble it if you want the ****. I would just do that to start, as suggested above.
