I don't own an m6 car but a freind and I switch cars sometimes and I don't recall missing a gear. Well there was a time that I missed 5th on nitrous, but what happened was is he had the button rigged and when I shifted I left off the button and I missed the gear and it didn't hurt anything.

Which I did learn how to drive a standard by this car. (by the way its an 95 z28.....yeah I know its not an LS1 but it has a t56 from a 99 z in the car)

Sounds like some people need to own another manual transmission vehicle before they buy an M6 LS1

I think I only ever missed one or two shifts in my car back when it was an M6. And those were on the street and I was quick enough to keep from releasing the clutch and causing all kinds of fubar fun.

BUT - I got sick of shifting in heavy traffic, and kept having clutch problems. First time I ever took the car to the track, the stupid dual-disk clutch stopped releasing all of the way, and third gear turned into a giant grind. Didn't miss the gears, just the clutch was not releasing all of the way. But sounded like missing gears to everyone And then there is the whole dump-the-clutch so that you can break-drivetrain-parts issue. Had that happen also. Ughhhhh.

I have 200-250 1/4 mile passes on my car.I have missed about 5 shifts.
2 when I bought a drag seat(I had it 1 click out of my usual'zone')
and 3 when I just rebuilt the tranny(need to bleed the clutch)
Now you're probably saying"if you don't miss shifts, why is the tranny being rebuilt?"
...I let my dad drive it once.
1200.00 later,NO ONE drives my car but me.

If you haven't missed some shifts or selected the wrong gear, you drive like a wuss. Its all part of the game. Just don't expect your dealer to fix your mistakes. We once had a guy with a 4.6 stang pull 3rd gear at 130+ and it threw 4 rods, broke the block apart at the rear(literally in half), the flywheel shattered and came through the floor, the trans broke apart at the tailshaft and somehow the driveshaft stayed attatched. You should have seen the damage the flywheel did. It shot metal through dash and busted the cowl and windshield. He, by luck or an act of god didn't get a scratch.

I have had 4 (M6) cars a 93 Z28 and three WS-6's, a 97,99 and an 01. I could say I never missed a **** if it were not for my 99. at least a third of the time I would go to grab third and grrrrrrrrr, I would never hit first it just woudn't go in, it was a hell of a car but for some reason I always looked stupid in that car. I have racked up over 18,000 mi on wy 01 without a missed shift(so far) but that 99 made me look bad on front of alot of people!

I've NEVER selected the wrong gear, and missed 5 shifts.
(and yes, I shift fast)
I guess I'm a big wuss.

I drove for a year and a half before i got my formula, all on auto's. I only drove a manual 2 times for a couple minutes each time. I have the stock stock shifter (not stock hurst), and i've only missed a few shifts in the year i've had it. The only times i miss a shift is when the tranny decides it doesn't wanna let me into a gear easily (3rd and 4th).

Are you guys powershifting, or speed shifting? I've not really had any problems speed shifting this car, but have heard things will break if they're powershifted. Any truth?

I can also safely say I've never missed a shift under normal circumstances. The only time it's happened was when my tranny was going out (yes, I continued to drive it and tear it up more, and yes GM had to foot the bill ). I have never once in my life meant to hit one gear while racing and forced it into another gear. Never. Not once. My mis-shifts that happened during the tranny's long, slow death occurred by trying to get the car into a certain gear and it not going in all the way, so it bounced out of gear and into neutral. I don't believe the T56 is easy to mis-shift. It's just a matter of what you're used to. Oh, and BTW, I've had lots and lots of people watch me drive and have never heard anyone say (in seriousness) that I drive like a wuss.

[EDIT]: Oh, yeah, and FWIW, I speed-shift my car. I've never once power-shifted it.

I guess I should clarify. I forgot I'm on the board with world's best drivers.

If you DO NOT miss a shift once in awhile, you need to work on your shifting speed. How quick can you operate the clutch pedal? 0.1, 0.05, 0.01? You keep going quicker and quicker until you miss. But when it's time for serious business, you back it off a hair.

It's like anything you do in racing. You go past the limit to find out where the limit is.

I never miss shifts on the street. No need.

My post, and, I believe, the posts of a few others, were in response to Y2K Blackbird's post. But, since your clarification, I'd like to point out a couple of things...

I don't share your outlook on improving your shifting speed until you miss a shift. I would rather not miss a shift, even if it does mean improving my shifting speed. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather get the technique right, and AVOID mis-shifting. Not push the limit UNTIL I miss a shift and risk messing something up big-time. I've been in the passenger seat with many other LS1 drivers behind the wheel and I see people that do not shift as fast as I do miss shifts all the time. Could it be that the "limit" you speak of is different from person to person? I think so. I think the shifting speed I'm at right now works just fine, and I'm not likely to change my rhythm I've got going and risk damage to my driveline for the possibility that I might be able to shift a little quicker. But whatever floats your boat. To each his own.
