Or on Ebay ( http://stores.ebay.com/THE-GEAR-BOX ), The Gear Box has the same kits a little less expensive (their 3-4 fork is like $5 more than D&D, but their rebuild kit is less... oh well). Judy @ The Gear Box is great.

Not really, that's approaching the cost of a brand new one. It really depends on what they replace, and what got messed up.

In my experience building these trannies, I've seen:

-mainshafts with the splines on the 5-6 driven gear worn out (which also takes out the 5-6 driven gear)
-broken 3-4 shift forks (stock)
-teeth on sliders rounded off (very common, all sliders 1/3/5/R)
-broken small teeth on gears (esp 2nd)
-broken slider keys on the 3-4 slider
-worn out 5th/6th gear small teeth

Getting all of these parts, new, would be around $1500 or so total - if every part above needed replacing. So, is $2k a good deal? For as easy as a T56 is to build, probably not, unless that was turnkey service.

If the transmission is still functional yet just suffering from a problem or two, it'd probably only cost a few hundred to fix. So, $2k is definitely at the high end of "what's wrong". I've rebuilt my own transmissions (I have 2), replacing a bunch of parts, for under $900 per tranny. YMMV...

Youll need a press, a good set of snap ring pliers, and a GM 5-6 gear puller. I am going to try and tackle my first one when I find one that needs rebuilding.
