Default Some newb downshifting ????

New to m6 LS1's. Have a few questions. First, in a race from a roll, what gear would you downshift to? I know it depends on speed. Lets say from 40mph and 60-70mph. Second, when you downshift do you just dump the clutch or ease it out quickly? I know most of these questions could be cleared up by trial and error but I just want to be pointed in the right direction before I go try it out.

From a 60-70 MPH roll your gonna want 3rd, from a 40 youll want 2nd. I just rev match and ease it into gear.

I agree with Black-z except for the "ease it into gear" part. If your like you said in a race from the roll you might wanna get that bad boy into gear ASAP. I wouldn't say "dump it" but I would say close to it.

Practice and you will get it down. Don't dump it per say, when I downshift, I always just rev it to about 4k or so depending on speed, and then let the clutch out and floor.

same here, try to get a general idea of what the rpms should be at in any gear at any given speed. Then bring the engine up to that speed as you let the clutch out. Just get out there and practice, once you get a feel for the car. Also where good shoes, I hate it when I have to pass a race up cause I am coming home and I am in my boots.

hey man with stock 3.42 gears i downshift to second from like 65...
it puts it in a nice sweet spot but be prepared to shift fast to 3rd...
i only recomend doing this when you get very very good at driving your car and you have to learn how to ease off the clutch and on to the gas just right or you will mess something up like your pushrods but if you can get it down your car will take off like nothing you ever felt before

From a 30 roll, rev up to about 4500 and put her in 1st. From a 60 roll, rev to about the same, and put her in 2nd. Both of these are sweet spots for us M6's. Just be ready to shift quickly once you go WOT, you don't want to bounce of the limiter.

If your just getting used to the car I wouldnt put it in first, if your already in first thats one thing but downshifting to first is pretty crazy, the engine revs fast as hell and you will lose traction.

True, but once you get to know your car and have some drag radials, it's a great place to start a race. (forgot this is for a newb) Practice some more, and get some tires, then try it from these points. Or you can also feather the throttle a little so you won't lose traction from a 1st gear punch.

30 rolls in 1st................ 55 in 2nd pretty much pointless beyond that 55mph in 2nd is nice......u really only have about 8-10mph to gain in 2nd then its on to 3rd so be ready.........1st gear will break lose thats for sure...........it looks cool doin 30 rolls in first the front end lifts up a bit then comes back down as the tires whip up.......makes the car look like its has a ton more power than it does.......it scares the civics away

30mph downshift in to first? Jesus, isn't the next shift at about 35mph into 2nd? Why risk hitting the rev limiter and most surely losing traction for the couple hundred rpms lower you will be in 2nd to start? 65mph into 2nd? That's also gotta be right around redline, I'd say 3rd.

Well, I was on my way home from the tanning bed last night. I had a full tank of fuel and it was about 35* out. I had been wanting to try the downshift to 2nd @ 60 and I was ready. I pushed in the clutch and as I moved the shifter into 2nd I revved to approximately 4500-5000 grand and let the clutch out pretty quick. It went in sooo smooth and resulted in getting sideways @ 60ish It was awesome to say the least. A buddy of mine came over later and I told him about it and we decided to take it for a spin so he could see for himself. Well, I guess with his extra weight (200lbs or so) it gave it more traction cause it either just hooked and flat hauled ***, or barely kicked over like 6" and went. But he was very impressed to say the least. I can't wait for a 60 roll race in this thing when the roads are warmer and hooking

What did your rpms go to after you let out the clutch?

It's nice to see that someone else isn't afraid to drive their car. Happy hunting.

I don't recall exactly, but I did it again on the way home from Wal-Mart this afternoon. 60 mph, as you switch to 2nd rev to 4500, and let out quickly on the clutch. It was as smooth as an auto.
