From all info I've been able to glean on the 'net, 98-00 F-body T-56's had paperlined blocker rings, while 01+ F-body T-56's had carbon blocker rings.

I changed my fluid with dextron 3 and 1 quart of Lucas trans fix . At first that **** was hard as hell to shift. I drove the car one night to work just so when I got home it would be warm enough for that thick mollassis to drain and planned on getting it out of my transmission. By the time I got home the next morning, It blended in with the rest of the dextron and now it shifts like there is nothing in its way. VERY smooth.

I am glad that I drove it to get it warm as I would have drained it without seeing how good it turned out.

It's now the second week that have the GM Synchromesh.
Cold start ups are a pain (30F and lower): shifting 1 to 2 takes a lot. 1 to 3 goes better. Once it's warmed up it's better. In general it's smoother, but I don't know if this oil is the good one for winter.

That's why I'm waiting until spring to try it out. I wonder if the Amsoil Synchromesh shifts any better in the cold??

I changed to Royal Purple right after I got the car, June 3K miles ago. I noticed shifting getting harder. This weekend I put in OEM Dexron III and I feel it shifts much smoother/earier now. Hope it lasts.

There was a thread about the lucas stuff on a different message board, where a guy drained it after he drove it and the fluid was all foam, I wouldn't run that stuff in my car if someone paid me to.

I initially had Synchromesh in there (w/o friction modifier) and it shifted well.

Now installed Redline D4 and it seems to shift slightly better. 5th to 3rd downshift pushing the car hard seems to engage easier now. Before it sometimes would take more than 1 attempt.

I currently have Valvoline ATF in mine. I would like to switch to Mobil 1 or Syncromesh though. Might do that along with all the other fluid changes here shortly.

It would be interesting to try other cars that have the same tranny and compare.
How does a Mustang shift? Do they have the same T56?

Some Aston Martin have it too, but I guess they won't let me try one...
Or maybe yes, I could at least try...

mustangs have 5 speeds, so your next closest bet would be a vette or viper as they both use t 56.

I think an 03/04 cobra also is 5 speed.

Thumbs up

The Aston Martin use a electronicly-activated shift lever... so you won't be getting a "feel" for much of hte shifting.

The Viper uses a different shift location/linkage so it actually may feel a bit different than the F-body. The Vette has 3-cone syncros in 3rd and 4th gears so shifting at high RPMS will be easier/quicker in the vette transaxle.

Likewise, you could convert the T56 syncromesh design to a Proshift or Faceplating dog-style shifting through Liberty's Gears if you dont' mind double-clutching.

For the ultimate T56 shift kit, I'm hoping to see one of these some day: www.zeroshift.com INSTANT gear changes. :o

Pre 03s have T5s or T3550s (IIRC) 5speeds.

03/04s have T56 6-speeds, as will the upcomming 07 Shelby GT500.

As for what fluid, I have no F'n idea whats in my car. But I think the general concensus is...try it, and see how you like it lol.

After 200 miles with GM Synchromesh I went back to a mineral Dexron III (I kept the Synchtomesh... just in case!).
Shifting is as as smooth as before, but I can shift faster!
The Synchromesh is not bad at all, but it has to get warm to shift in a proper manner: in winter this can take 1/2 hour.
In the cold mornings it's a pain to shift using Syncromesh and I was tired of that.
...back to the rooths...!

Not as a complete fill, but an add. I'm redoing my cluctha, and might as well redo the fluid also (90k+)
Going to use dino DexIII, but what about the Lucas s a quart add-in?
I've used it in a few autos, and it's great!
