Default help my T56 is stuck in 4th

searched for this and didn't really have any results.

tonight i was getting onto the highway in my 02 trans am with a T56 and hurst shifter, i was goin through the gears getting up to speed. shifted into 4th perfectly fine no grinding or anything went to shift into 5th and that just wasn't happening. this all happened about 11 o'clock and i have to work early tomorrow so i didn't have the time or energy to really check much. any suggestions/experiences would be extremely appreaciated.

This happened to my friend once but I wouldn't recommend it. I didn't want to be any part of it but He insisted. He told me to push in the clutch and he got in the back and kicked the fire out of the shifter and it came out he just skipped 4th gear till he got it fixed.

ditto on zr2877's idea, alot of people wind up doing this so they can drive it, just skip fourth. hop in back and kick it out of 4th.

i was right up the road from the dealer when this happened so i just limped it in there. what kind of aftermarket parts could i use to keep this from happening again? i'm going to try to get 500 rwhp outa my car without nitrous or F.I. (and i know it's a lofty goal but why not aim high) so i'm gonna have to replace alot anyways....

I took a mallet and knocked mine out. The result( dont know from the intital damage or the few times getting it unstuck out of 4th) was a broken syncro ring and some chewed up slider keys. Check out www.ddperformance.com for 6 speed parts

It is more likely stuck in 4th because of broken shift keys

Yeah , you broke the 3-4 keys . Tremec suggest using metal 3-4 fork and replacing the keys . I have built a hell of alot of T56 units and my opinion is that the rings get worn enough to let the keys pop out of their slot and then they brake as you force it out of 4th gear . This is a very common problem with the t56 units , you are not alone .

Nope, not alone at all! I just got my tranny back in. Got the broken slider keys back in a box. Put in the steel 3-4 shift fork, carbon fiber blocker rings, billet keys, and a steel 3rd main shaft bearing shim(stock plastic one was melted).

*thesource* I have heard this is mainly caused by overshifting 4th, and can be prevented by using shifter stops. Do you agree this is possible? I don't know enough about them to say, see you know alot about the T-56 what's your thoughts on that? I figured better safe than sorry, so while I had my shifter out, I drilled and tapped some 3/8" NF holes in my shifter, got some bolts, and jam nuts and made shifter stops on my Hurst. I figure it can't hurt!

Yes ,that will help . When the rings start to wear or the unit gets end play in it the keys are going to pop out sooner or later . A shift stop helps keep them from overshifting the keys and reduces the chance of them popping out .

You broke the slider key and it's jammed up.Happen to me with less than 1,000 miles. It happens to all of us or will down the road. Make sure you get billet slider keys for 3rd and 4th. If you just keep jammin on the stick it might come loose. You might want to try to roll the car and pop the clutch and push on the stick at the same time. I poped mine out like that the first time it happen to me. It locked again the next week so I janked it out

I agree with everyone else - slider keys. I replaced mine with D&D billet keys. They are expensive, but worth it.

Mine did it the first week I bought the car. I did the clutch dump jerk exercise and it popped right out. Not had a problem since. In the future after I have money again I will upgrade the T56 to viper stuff and get all the little things fixed.
