Special tools NEEDED for a clutch install ?

I too tried grease, and I too made a helluva mess.

Then I tried wet toilet paper. Worked great. Give it a shot! Just use a smaller socket, don't worry about a small gap betweent the bearing and the socket, the TP doesn't shoot out of there like the grease did.
