You will need the alingment tool, but you can just use a crow bar to hold the flywheel. I used a regular small floor jack with a piece of 2x6 wood to lift/lower the tranny. You might also want to get a Snap On hydraulic line disconnect tool, just makes it easier. And if you don't drain the tranny fluid you will need a plug for the tailshaft.

- What kind of plug will I need ? I suppose I would rather not drain the tranny fluid if I did not need to.

Thanks a lot !!

Crow bar? Bah! I just put on some mechanix gloves, put a death grip on the flywheel, and had a friend torque it down.

The transmission plugs come in a pack of 5 , you can get them at most autoparts stores.

Also, on the hydraulic line disconnect tool... is that for the slave cylinder ? Any more details on this tool ? I went to snap on to do a search, and nothing came up. Do you happen to have a part # ?

Thanks, Gary

It's called a "Clutch coupling tool", pn - 7646a. It's used to disconnect the line that runs in to the slave cylinder. You will also want a LONG extension and a swivel to get the top tranny bolts.

- Is this the tool you were referring to. According to the snap-on online catalog it is for a ford... I suppose it will work anyway...

Where would the transmission plug go ? In the install documents that I have gone through, I haven't seen a reference to this.

just get a clutch alignment tool from the auto parts store like 5 bux.

the hydraulic fitting is easy. when you are putting the tranny back in and as soon as you stab snd have things stable just plug it in to the slave. if you wait till the tranny is on the pressure is too great to push the fitting on and you will have to losen the tranny and back it out about 1/2 in. the best thing is to plug it when you are stabbing the tranny in there.

i used the 2x6 for my tranny jack. lol

oh it is good to have LOOOOONG extensions makes it easier for the top bolts on the bellhousing and the tranny when bolting and unbolting

Blah, you don't need any of that stuff

I have installed about 3 clutch's using normal tools and a floor jack to pick the tranny up. Granted it was slightly more aggrivating that way, but if you're tool limited it can be done.

A tranny jack is definately VERY nice to have though.

Damian I did the same thing in my driveway on a hill Better yet I installed the tranny start to finish by myself. Was pretty proud at putting the tranny back in...with no alignment tool by myself as I am a musularly challenged type fella!

If you are going to replace the pilot bearing in the crankshaft, you will need a puller-kit.
This is currently my stumbling block with the clutch in my truck

Not sure if this will work on the hydraulic get up, but on my 5.0 all you have to do is use teh clutch alignment tool, bolt on the bell housing, assemble the clutch linkage , get the teh trans all the way in untill it stops. Then have a buddy push in the clutch, wiggle the trans a little bit, BAM! your in, no drama.

Will it work on the hydraulic setup?

Can't you pack it with wet toilet paper, invert the right sized socket (that barely slips in to the bearing hole), and keep packing / tap the pilot bearing out? That trick works slicker than, well, wet toilet paper. 2 minutes, guaranteed.

I tried packing it with axle grease and banging it out-----didn't work, just got axle grease everywhere . I might try the toilet paper thing and see what happens. I will probably just get the socket stuck behind the pilot bearing!
