Default Is this normal? Pics inside.

I helped a buddy change his M6 fluid today on a 1998 Z28, 65,000 miles. Fluid that came out looked great, really clean and bright.

Anyway, I noticed the area below the shifter was really wet, as was the place where the driveshaft enters the transmission. Here are some pictures of the wet areas. Is this normal? The wet stuff was pitch black, so I could not tell what kind of fluid it was. Car runs and shifts great, no problems. No leakage from drain or fill holes, no pan leakage or even seapage, both engine and transmission are bone dry and clean except this area.

This one is right where the shifter goes into the car, you can see black fluid streaked :

Thanks for any thoughts.

Thanks '02.

I've been told by a dealership mechanic that as long as it's not dripping, its normal seepage, so that makes me feel better.

So that is normal seepage? I noticed the same thing on my car and thought I needed to change that rear yoke seal. I may replace the seal anyway when I pull the tranny to replace the clutch. Just to be on the safe side.

Hey Hugger,

In fact the dealership mechanic specifically mentioned the yoke seal, and he said when that is bad it always drips, but that it seeps as part of its normal function. So if the ground is dry after parking overnight, your yoke seal is fine according to him. He's been a GM mechanic for 18 years.

Thanks 98Z

No fluid on the ground, just a ton of stuff sprayed all under the car. I guess I will just have to clean it up a little.

That looks like the shifter and the yoke maybe leaking. I had to replace the bearing that is behind the seal to get mine to stop leaking. If its leaking its not normal. I think what maybe happening is everytime you go wot the bearing allows the driveshaft to shift and fuid passes by it. This what happened in my case. autozone carries a timkin bearing and seal for like 5 dollars. How does the drive shaft look anywear on the oitside of the yoke?

The driveshaft is clean and dry the rest of the way back to the gears. The only wet spot is that in the pictures.

How hard is this bearing to replace? Do you get it from below or from above from the shifter?

first thing I would do would be to pull the shifter and reseal it using a silcone. then clean the rest of the area with a degreaser. If it starts showing leakage then you know its coming from the tailshft bushing. The bushing was easy to replace it sits behind the seal you have to remove the driveshaft and seal look up in the rear of the tranny. you can crush the old one with a pliars and pull it out the new one can be tapped into place with a wodden dowel. You could always wait and see if it gets worse thats what I did first.

Could also be overfilled and spilling out the overfill tube at the top of tranny.

Thanks fellas I'll advise him to clean the area and watch it.

I'm gonna check mine this weekend too.
