Question about 3rd gear....

Default Question about 3rd gear....

Hey everyone, I just bought a 2000 WS6. Everything works fine, except for 3rd gear sometimes. At first I thought I was just lazy and didn't pay attention enough, and it seemed to kick out of third gear as i was letting off the clutch. After more driving it seems to do it if i try to shift lightly into third around 20-40 mph. On my way home from work today i was playing with it, and with the clutch completely in just coasting at about 40, and going into and out of third gear a few times, its caught a little bit as if the clutch wasn't pushed in at all. It only does this in 3rd gear, any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Synchros. EXACT same thing happened to my mustang, but in 2nd gear. gonna be between $400 and $800 depending on where you go.

while u got the tranny out might as well go with a full rebuild to get rid of future concerns.

Yea, thanks guys. I was told that the transmissions in my car is not the T56, but a weaker one for some reason. Same tranny as the viper, but with cheaper parts, so if it comes down to a rebuild they told me to set it up the same as the viper. And I still need tires. Goodbye money.....

go for better than factory stuff as well if that wasent already clear.

synchronizers, forks, keys, pads, rings etc.

If you have a 6 speed in your car , you have a T56 in it .

Yea that's what I thought. It kinda suprised me when he said that, but either way it still needs to get fixed so I wasn't going to argue with him about it.

And about the syncros thing, he said if i was having problems getting it into 3rd gear to begin with, then it would be syncros, but if it actually goes in and then kicks it back out it could be set screws? Or something else? Sounds like a combination of things to me but im new to manual transmissions.

Where are you located. You might want to try a sponsor's shop. They'll get you set up better than someone who doesn't have a whole lot of LS1 knowledge.

mine does the same thing, it will pop out of 3rd gear i only have 19k miles to!!! stock car! BS!!!! if i firmly put it in gear though it wont do it

Could be a bent shift fork. The t56 is poupular for it.

I am located in central minnesota. I have a speed shop that is well known for their work, although expensive. They are the only ones that could get my old Iroc-Z working right. John Boos is the name of the guy. He runs a Vette with a 427 aluminum block in it in the cannonball run. I think he came in 2nd in the last one. He knows his stuff but charges an arm and a leg and im currently out of limbs. And yea mine only has 29K miles on it, and will stay in third if i give it a good push, but i doubt that is helping the problem so i just skip 3rd all together. People are still scared when i pull up next to them, they dont need to know i dont have a 3rd gear as of now....
