Default Clutch issues

Ok well my clutch has been doing some weird stuff lately. When I take off in first, it seems to bog on me. I dont know how else to describe it but it feels like you know when its about to die if you dont have your rpms high enough? That is what it feels and sounds like. I have my rpms high enough that is not the issue. And its only when I take off. I had one of my buddys in my car who has a Z06 and he is fairly knowledgable, and he was like, "WTF is wrong with your clutch?" So I dont know. Any ideas, or similar probs?

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Take it out and go up a hill in fifth gear while accelerating and see if you feel it slipping. You'll know if it slips. The rpms will climb but your speed will not increase.

If its slipping it needs to be replaced. Eventually it will slip so bad it will be undriveable.

You didnt try starting out in fifth did you?! cuz that's what it sounds like you tried doing. Get yourself near a hill doing minimal speed in 5th gear so about 40-45 mph i believe it is w/ stock rear end. drive up the hill and press the gas to accelerate. If the RPMs climb and your speed doesn' t then your clutch is slipping and get it replaced. It will barely grab.

Now if you did as I explained and your car still rolled backwards then replace that clutch NOW! LoL. If so I am almost surprised you can drive on it at all.

Yeah I did try to take off in 5th on a hill...LMAO!!! I didnt kill it either so give me props for that!!! But no not to my recollection does it not catch if Im on a hill in 5th. It goes fine. But I will double check that. But it doesnt do anything strange in 5th on a hill.

Putting a car in 5th gear and gunning it only will tell you if your clutch is slipping BADLY. I know mine is slipping but I can't do the hill thing in any gear becasue it isn't that bad. The only way I can tell is a loss of power to the wheels and a smell after a hard run.

Really???LOL....yeah I did it for like 2 seconds. Well it was the hill in my driveway. I first going up it in 1st like 10 mph. Then I was like hey let me try the 5th thing , obviously I misunderstood. So I put it in 5th and put enough gas to it so I didnt kill it. I only did it like maybe a half second and I was like thats not working. I dont think its slipping, but I still have to find a hill in town that I can be going 30-40 mph on to test it. Thats going to be a challenge. I was going to say the hell with it and just buy and new one. What are some signs that its in really bad condition that I should watch for?

So if it smells that is not good? Cause my car always smells like all kinds of stuff after I run it hard. Also sometimes it makes a high pitched winding noise when I go up a hill in first, what is that?

I think you are referring to gear whine. I'm not sure whether gear whine is really a problem, but I do know if your smelling stuff, thats no good. That smell(assuming nothing else is wrong w/ the car) is the clutch burning, which means time for a new one

It really only smells after I have been driving it hard and smoking people. Its like a combo of clutch, brakes, and burnt rubber Im pretty sure. But on a regular basis day to day driving there is no smell. Good to hear that the "whine" is normal. I was kinda worried, cause I really hear it in first gear on a hill , usually when Im going up the driveway.

If your clutch doesn't grab right away, or takes longer then expected to change gears, you are probably slipping. Ruynning the car hard while stock and getting smells can mean a few things- Clutch, Tires, Brakes, and Catalytic Converters burning excess fuel going through the exhaust. Mine does it all the time. Hopefully your not burning Oil as well, but it happens sometimes in the LS1's. Speaking of that Make sure your Oil Level and Oil Pressure are at correct levels. Check your coolant while your at it.

And yeah your right, if it is to much to worry about just replace the damn clutch and worries are over...just make sure you go throuh the break in stages first
