Default ? about reverse

My t56 has been a nightmare in reverse ever since i missed 5 th gear racing one time. It will pop out and sometime not even go in to gear. Only does this is R. I dont hvae money to upgrade everything in the tranny right now. I am needing to know what i have hurt and if it is possible to just fix revers without destroying other bearings and such on the main shaft. I know on some manual transmissions you can repair only reverse. I know it all needs upgraded but funds are not there right now. thanks for the help

This could be due to a bent fork, broken fork pads, damaged reverse clutch teeth( would have had to mis-shift more that once here) OR all of these.
You can fix just reverse but it still requires a remove and teardown. Reverse is at the rear so a full teardown is not required.

I just started this same repair this week, although mine was broken when I bought it, so I'm not sure how the damage occurred. Mine's also in a 1970 El Camino, so I'm not sure how much room you have, but I was able to get everything apart with the transmission still in the car. I think most of the guys would tell you to take it out, but I don't have a lift. Anyway, it's pretty straightforward, just make sure you have a good pair of lock ring pliers and a 3-jaw gear puller.

BTW - I had to buy a new gear, synchro, blocker ring, and snap ring set and it set me back $340 from D&D Performance.

I have the same problem when I let out the clutch, I have to hold reverse in and it will make this horrible pop when it engages. sounds terrible but its held together for many weeks now.
