Why...Why...Why??!! (Grinding when down shifting to 3rd)
Car: 2002 Firehawk 6spd with 1900 miles on it. Any speed above 60mph and the car will not go into 3rd. below 60 it will grind and pop into gear. It only does this when down-shifting to 3rd. When getting the transmission warrantied, what would be the benefit of the drill out mod, I know it helps speed up engagement of the clutch but does it allow more travel? I have noticed the car rolls forward an inch or so when I engage first at a stop and after having 2 LS1's with transmission woes I don't want to keep having problems. BTW the car doesn't have any mods but a STB SFC's and a B&B catback, I don't even have a shifter on it yet. Why did GM build these clutch systems so crappy? I am not happy right now .

If the car rolls forward when you put it in gear, it definately sounds like the clutch is not disengaging fully. Have you checked the clutch fluid lately? You'll have to take off the cap and remove the black "bladder" thingy in there. The fluid should be up to the "step" inside the reservoir. If your reservoir is not level like mine, be careful not to spill fluid all over the place when removing the cap. I hope you fix is this simple.

Yep, it's full. Sounds like I have a syncro problem, what sucks is this thing only has 1.9K miles on it. Would the drill out mod help after I have the syncro problem worked out?

I would say you have more than a synchro problem if your car inches forward while the clutch pedal is in. Mine did the same thing not too long ago. It's probably due to the clutch not fully disengaging due to a hydraulic problem. Don't know if that would be related to your problem with 3rd gear.

Goes into the dealer for a tranny check tomorrow. I get the feeling it's a shift fork. 1900 miles on the clock, so much for the internal stops theory. "Throw away the stops they aren't needed" my *** when I put a shifter in, you better believe the stops will be in it.

Well, my handle is LS1 Hawk over there. It was a similar thread but not mine.

Well it's fixed. Fork asm, sync ring, syncro, 3rd gear and trans ring. Looks like GM didn't correct the TSB that effects the 99-00 cars. Keep your fingers crossed that you don't have a problem cause I'm thinking this can only be corrected by a tranny rebuild, not a new tranny.
