Default Shifter vibrations

I just had 4.10s installed and now at high speeds I am getting so much vibration (not actually moving the stick) just DEEP vibration its unreal. What would cause this?

my guess would be the gears are not set right. if you did nothing before the change it can only be the gear install problem.just a guess

Could be an out of ballance driveshaft also.

If there were no problems before the 4.10's were installed:

1. Recheck the gear lash, since 4.10's don't install easily into a 10 bolt rear. If it is a 12-bolt or Ford 9", then it might not be quite as obvious.

2. Check the driveshaft as stang killer mentioned. When the driveshaft is out of balance slightly, then a wierd kind of slowly oscillating hum will be present when you're at low rpms at highspeed (6th gear most likely).

3. Transmission mount might be old and possibly torn. Not too sure if you have replaced your transmission mount, or replaced it with a ES or Prothane mount, but if you are using a stock or 1LE transmission mount, then it might be worn to the point that the shifter vibrates excessively.

This happened to me when I noticed that there was a vibrating noise from the gear shifter, yet it wasn't visible, however I use an aftermarket Hurst shifter.

How would you describe this oscillating hum? A wet finger going around the rim of a crystal glass?

I have a slight vibration since my 3.73 install, and have suspected the driveshaft balance. I now know it's the balance because I rotated the driveshaft 180 degrees and lots of the vibration stopped. Once I find a good shop for the balance, I am going to pull the driveshaft have it balanced and the U joints replaced.

Mine makes a hum for about a 500 rpm window in 6th, between 1200-1700.

At about the lowest RPMs tolerable in 6th gear, the hum will oscillate. It would oscillate from about every half-second, by sounding like a hum getting slighty louder the next half-second, then slowly becoming silent the next half-second, then repeating the cycle again. In other words, the imbalance will sound like a hum when the driveshaft is balanced, however only the amplitude (loudness) will be oscillating and there shouldn't be any change in frequency (pitch).

Another possiblity that I failed to mention was have you had your rear axle thrust angle checked? This is usually done when an alignment is performed. If your rear axle doesn't have a straight thrust angle (canting towards left or right side), then your balancing effort will be inaccurate. Sounds crazy, but that's exactly what happened to me when I tried to balance a new driveshaft that I purchased a while ago.
