Default best way to go about getting third gear repaced

I will be getting my third gear fixed soon, I asked the guy about it who inspected my car and he told me they will have to take the whole thing apart and rebuild all of it and it will cost at least 2 grand. I know there is a better deal than that that i could find. Also, do i need to get the whole tranny rebuilt or just third, because that is the only gear i am having problems with. thanks

Thats a pretty good deal. Will i need to get my entire tranny rebuilt or just third gear? If i have to get it all rebuilt i might go with that company. Was that 1100 including shipping it out there and back, if not, how much was it. thanks

I'm assuming its popping out of 3rd gear?

You can also try D&D.

It occasionally pops out of third gear. I haven't had any problems with any other gears. I've done some searching on this site and it seems that if i supply the parts, labor should cost about $250. Exactly what are all the parts i should get for the rebuild and should i keep it stock or build it stronger. Also, if you could tell me about how much it would cost. I'm still very new to these cars, so i don't know much about the tranny. Are there any stock parts in the tranny that don't hold up very well/break easy and i should get stronger parts for those. I don't plan on making the car any faster than a mid 12. thanks

Also while the trannys out, you should inquire about changing the gearing to m12 gearing..

Im with him, my 3-4 shift fork was bent, but I rebuilt the whole thing, and Im glad I did. Got everything fixed, and a RAM Clutch for $800. Thats with the master kit and everything. Did all the work with the help of a friend. Oh, and I got a second gear, bc a couple of the teeth for the locking ring were broke, it would have worked, but if youre gonna have it apart, might as well go all out if you got the $$$$.

money shouldn't be a problem, but do you have any idea about how much it will cost? If i had the parts and took it somewhere, it seems to me that i am looking at about a grand total, give or take a couple hundred, does that sound right? thanks

I have Rebuilt too many of these things to count over the years.
Just to get third gear off you pretty much have to Take the Whole thing apart.
It sits up on the front of the Main shaft.
But do to the size of the Gears the only way to get it off you have to have all the other gears off the shaft.
So since the whole thing is apart , throwing a Basic rebuild kit in there (about 155 Bucks) and a steel 3-4 shift fork (55 bucks) is money well spent.
If you lived closer I could save you alot of money . But Mailing that thing to Texas May run the price up for you.
My guess on the problem is Broken Keys on the 3-4 synchro assembly.
If you really know what your doing in one of these things you can replace them with out a total Dissassemble of the main shaft.

Yeah, I agree that you could probably get away without having to disassemble the main shaft. I just finished disassembling mine, second gear teeth were GONE, and to get second gear off you have to take EVERYTHING off of the main shaft except for 3rd gear and the 3-4 synchros, as it pulls off the other way. You still have to take the case apart and pull a few things to get third out even though it is at the front simply because of the 3-4 shift fork. I'm in the wrong business...I need to open a tranny shop that only fixes manuals...

More than likely if it's popping out of third you'll need either a new 3-4 synchro ring which I think they only sell as an assembly with the hub too, or a 3-4 shift fork if yours is bent. It might not save you any money to but parts and take it somewhere, shops usually get good deals when they buy parts. It's still going to be expensive no matter what you do.
